Coming Spring 2024
Franz Liszt's William Tell lieder display his skill for musical imagery, depicting beautiful pastoral scenes, majestic mountains, and perilous storms. The passion and intimacy of the Petrarch sonnets seemed like a beautiful complement to the William Tell lieder, and the combination of the two song collections celebrates Liszt’s full compositional palette. During the programming of this album, I searched for songs from a contemporary of Liszt that would demonstrate a contrasting approach to his signature melodrama and showy bravado. Considering the weight that Liszt’s name already holds, this also seemed like an ideal opportunity to include lesser-known works that deserve greater attention.

I am thrilled to pair these two Liszt cycles with five lieder from German composer Josephine Lang. Lang has extensive output of vocal repertoire, and her music is richly characterful and expressive. Though it may seem an unlikely partnership at first, pairing the virtuosity and melodrama of the first versions of Liszt’s Drei Lieder aus Wilhelm Tell and Tre Sonetti di Petrarca with selections from Lang’s opus 10 and opus 43 song collections sets in stark relief Lang’s gift for subtlety and nuance and cements her place alongside historically better-known composers of lieder.
